The Nowra Sails Project, undertaken by Shoalhaven City Council, aimed to rejuvenate the historic site of the Nowra Sailing Club, which was tragically destroyed by fire in 2017. The project holds significant cultural importance, as it involves retaining the 100-year-old piles of the original sailing club as a legacy feature.

Jirgens Civil faced unique challenges due to the site’s complex geology, which required the installation of 16-meter-long 502 steel piles to support the weight of the new wharf and viewing platform. The project also included the construction of floating pontoons and the installation of architecturally designed shade sails, adding both functionality and aesthetic appeal to the waterfront site.
Successfully navigating the heritage requirements, Jirgens Civil completed the Nowra Sails Project with a thoughtful approach to preserving the historical elements while incorporating modern infrastructure. The finished project not only provides a functional space for the community but also stands as a tribute to the rich history of the Nowra Sailing Club. The addition of the pontoons and shade sails has created a visually striking and inviting public space.
